How to Pull a P-Trap

Clearing a clog or need drain access under a sink? Removing the P-trap is a simple, tool-light job most homeowners can handle.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 10–15 minutes Cost: No parts needed unless the trap is damaged
Before you start: this is general information, not a diagnosis of your specific situation. Shut off water where instructed, take your time, and stop if anything looks different than described here. If you're not comfortable at any point, stop and call us — that's what we're here for.
  1. 1Place a bucket directly under the P-trap (the U-shaped pipe under the sink) — it will have standing water in it.
  2. 2Loosen the two large plastic slip nuts by hand, or with slip-joint pliers if they're stuck (go gentle, they crack).
  3. 3Slide the trap down and off — expect the bucket to catch a cup or two of water plus whatever's built up inside.
  4. 4Clear any visible clog, rinse the trap out, and check the rubber slip-nut washers for cracks or flattening — replace them if they look worn.
  5. 5Slide the trap back into place, hand-tighten the slip nuts, then run water and check under the sink for drips before walking away.
This is the access work behind our $29 P-trap charge — if you've already pulled it before we arrive, mention it when you book. If the clog isn't in the trap itself (water backs up further down, or multiple fixtures are slow), the problem is deeper in the line — that's when to call us.
