Ejector Pump vs. Sump Pump
They look similar and live in similar pits, but they do different jobs: a sump pump moves groundwater away from your foundation; a sewage ejector pump grinds-or-passes and lifts wastewater from below-grade fixtures up to the main sewer line. Different pumps, different failure modes, different stakes — a failed sump means water; a failed ejector means sewage.
Warning Signs Worth Acting On
The pump runs constantly or short-cycles. Gurgling or slow drainage from basement fixtures only. Sewage odor near the pit — often a failed lid seal or vent issue, not always the pump itself. Alarm sounding (if your system has one). Or the obvious one: the basement bathroom backs up while upstairs drains fine. Any of these, stop running water to those fixtures and call.
Repair, Replace, and What We Check
Float switches, check valves, and lid seals are repairable and cause a large share of "failed pump" calls. An aging motor on a pump near the end of its service life usually makes replacement the honest call — same math conversation we have about water heaters. Either way we check the check valve, venting, and alarm setup, because a new pump behind a bad check valve fails early.
