Why Hose Bibs Fail Around Here

The Pacific Northwest freeze-thaw cycle is the usual killer. A standard hose bib with a hose left attached over winter traps water in the pipe, freezes, and splits — and you often don't find out until spring when you turn it on and water runs inside the wall. The other common failures are worn washers (steady dripping) and seized or broken handles on older units.

Repair or Replace?

A dripping bib with a good body is often just a washer — cheap fix. A split, frost-damaged, or badly corroded bib gets replaced, and we replace with frost-free models where the plumbing allows: the shutoff sits back inside the heated wall cavity, so a hose left on in December doesn't turn into a burst pipe in the wall. We'll tell you which situation you have before any work starts.

What a Replacement Looks Like

Shut off water, cut out the old bib, solder or crimp in the new one (frost-free where possible), test under pressure, and make sure it drains properly when shut off. If the bib feeds off galvanized pipe that's failing, we'll show you what we found rather than just caulking over a bigger problem.

Common Questions

Hose Bib Repair & Replacement Questions

My hose bib drips no matter how hard I close it. Washer or replacement?

Usually a washer or seat issue if the body's intact — a quick repair. If it's frost-split or the body's corroded, replacement is the honest fix. We can tell within a minute of looking at it.

What is a frost-free hose bib?

A bib with a long stem that closes the valve back inside the heated part of the wall, so there's no water sitting in the cold section to freeze. Standard upgrade on replacements here, and worth it.

Water sprayed inside the wall when I turned my spigot on in spring. What happened?

Classic freeze split — the pipe burst over winter and the leak only shows when the valve opens. Shut the bib off and call; we'll replace the damaged section and the bib.

Do I need to disconnect hoses in winter?

Yes — even frost-free bibs can freeze with a hose attached, because the hose traps water in the stem. Disconnect hoses before the first hard freeze. It's the cheapest plumbing insurance there is.

Can you add a new hose bib where there isn't one?

Usually yes, if there's accessible supply plumbing nearby — a common add on the opposite side of the house from the existing one. We'll quote it flat-rate after a quick look.
