How to Replace a Showerhead

One of the easiest, cheapest upgrades in the house — better pressure or a new style in about 10 minutes.

Difficulty: Very Easy Time: 10 minutes Cost: $15–60 for the showerhead
Before you start: this is general information, not a diagnosis of your specific situation. Shut off water where instructed, take your time, and stop if anything looks different than described here. If you're not comfortable at any point, stop and call us — that's what we're here for.
  1. 1Unscrew the old showerhead from the shower arm by hand, or with pliers wrapped in a cloth if it's stuck (turn counterclockwise).
  2. 2Clean off the old plumber's tape/residue from the threads on the shower arm.
  3. 3Wrap new plumber's tape clockwise around the threads (2-3 wraps is plenty).
  4. 4Hand-tighten the new showerhead onto the arm, then snug it another quarter turn with pliers wrapped in cloth — don't overtighten.
  5. 5Turn the water on and check for drips at the connection; add a bit more tape and retighten if it weeps.
If the shower arm itself (the pipe coming out of the wall) is loose, wobbly, or leaking where it meets the wall, that's a different repair behind the tile — stop and call us rather than tightening something that isn't supposed to move.
