What Plumbing Work Looks Like in Bremerton

Bremerton was founded in 1891 and grew up around Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. During World War II the shipyard pushed the population to roughly 80,000, close to double what it is today, and a lot of the city's housing went up to serve that workforce. In older houses we check two things first: the water supply piping (original galvanized steel corrodes from the inside and shows up as low pressure and rusty water) and the sewer lateral running out to the street.

Bremerton also has something most of our other cities don't: an older combined sewer system, where parts of the city's storm runoff and sewage have shared pipes. The city has spent years reducing combined sewer overflows, and it puts real rules on homeowners as part of that, starting with downspouts.

Downspouts & The Sewer

Downspouts Tied Into the Sewer

Since January 1, 2005, Bremerton has prohibited stormwater connections to the sanitary sewer. Houses whose roof downspouts or driveway drains still run into the sewer are billed a "SW Facility Impact" charge on the utility bill to cover the treatment cost. The city offers free site assessments that come with a separation plan and a follow-up inspection; their stormwater line is 360-473-5920.

If you have the city's plan, or just know a downspout drops into a sewer pipe, we do the plumbing side: cap the sewer connection properly and reroute the downspout to the approved discharge in the plan. We camera the lateral at the same time when the connection point is hard to find, because old downspout tie-ins are often buried at the house foundation.
