Stop the Water, Then Call

For a burst pipe, close the main shutoff where the supply enters the house. If you cannot find it, the meter box for your water district connection is the next place to shut it.

For a sewage backup, stop running water and flushing. Every gallon you send down the drain has to go somewhere, and in a backup that means into the house.

If the leak is from a water heater, close the cold supply valve on top of the tank and turn off the gas or the breaker. A tank that has split will keep draining until the supply is shut.

What Counts

Calls We Treat as Urgent

Active leaks, sewage in the house, no water, and a water heater pouring from the tank are urgent. A dripping faucet can wait for a regular visit.

If your home uses a sewage pump system and an alarm goes off, stop using water. That alarm usually means the pump or the tank level needs attention before anything else drains in.

If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside before you call a plumber.
