Tacoma Service-Line Reality

What Tacoma Water Service Lines Look Like

The water service line is the line that runs from the city meter at the curb to the inside of the house. In older Tacoma neighborhoods, that line was originally galvanized. Many got swapped to copper in the mid-century. A handful of neighborhoods saw polybutylene installs in the 1980s. Newer construction is typically polyethylene or PEX. When the service line fails, you see one of four things: wet yard along the line path, low pressure across the whole house, a sudden water-bill spike, or brown water from corroded supply.

What makes Tacoma replacements specific is the parking strip. Many older Tacoma streets have mature street trees in the parking strip directly above the service line path. Open-trench replacement under those trees damages the root system and often requires arborist consultation. Trenchless pipe-bursting is often the better path when the existing line condition allows for it. We assess feasibility on the site visit before quoting.

Tacoma service-line scenarios

  • Wet spot or sinking ground in the yard: Active leak, usually narrowing pressure across the house at the same time.
  • Pressure has dropped across the whole house: A leak outside, a partially blocked galvanized service line, or both.
  • Water bill spike with all fixtures off: The meter is moving, which means a leak is somewhere on the customer side of the meter.
  • Brown or rusty water from the cold tap: Old galvanized service corroding from the inside.
  • Polybutylene service line on a 1980s home: Sometimes a scheduled replacement before failure makes more sense than waiting.
Our Process

How a Tacoma Water Line Replacement Runs

  1. Confirm the leak is on the service line and not inside the house
  2. Locate the line path and depth; identify the existing line material
  3. Assess trenchless feasibility against soil, depth, and existing utilities
  4. Coordinate with Tacoma Public Utilities and pull the necessary permit
  5. Request locates for all utilities crossing the line path
  6. Excavate access points (open trench) or set up trenchless equipment when applicable
  7. Replace the line with current-code material
  8. Pressure-test the new line
  9. Backfill basic cover and call for inspection

FAQs

Common Questions: Water Line Replacement in Tacoma

Do you do trenchless water line replacement in Tacoma?

Yes when soil, depth, and existing utility crossings allow. On Tacoma streets with mature parking-strip trees, trenchless is often the better path because it spares the tree roots and the parking strip. We tell you straight when trenchless is not the right fit.

How long does a Tacoma water service line replacement take?

Most replacements run one to two days depending on length, depth, and method. Permits, locates, and inspections add scheduling time. The actual digging and pipe install is the fast part; coordinating with TPU and pulling the permit is the slow part.

Will my yard look the same after?

We backfill and grade basic cover. Sod, plants, irrigation, and hardscape are by others unless those steps are written into the scope. On a parking-strip job we coordinate with the customer about the surface plan before we dig.

Do I have to be home for the work?

Not for the dig itself, usually. We do need someone available to confirm the meter shutoff timing and to be on the property when the new line is pressure-tested and the inspection happens.

Who handles the meter side?

The meter and the public-side line are TPU's responsibility. Our scope ends at the property line on the customer side. We coordinate the meter swap or transition with TPU as part of the job.
